What is Polypropylene

Polypropylene is a synthetic thermoplastic polymer which is extracted from oil and natural gas. Gas propylene was not a useful material of oil and natural gas facilities until the Italian scientist polymerized the gas propylene in late 1950’s. Then polypropylene is machined into melt by extruding. The melt comes through the spinneret which creates the shape and length of filaments. Polypropylene is divided into two main types in the market, homopolymer and copolymer.

Homopolymer

Polypropylene homopolymer is a general-purpose grade. Most people favor this type. It is a semi-crystalline solid form, containing only propylene homopolymer. Propylene has a high ratio of strength-to-weight. It’s stiffer and stronger than the copolymer. Homopolymer is an ideal material in many corrosion resistant products as it’s of good chemical resistance and weldability. It’s also widely applied in package, non woven fabric, pipes, and automotive.

Copolymer

Compared with homopolymer, polypropylene copolymer is a little softer. It’s tougher and more durable. So it has a better performance on impact strength. Copolymer is not easily cracked and it’s very tough even in a lower temperature. Polypropylene copolymer is separated into random copolymers and block copolymers according to the ratio of propene and ethane.

Propylene random copolymer

It is manufactured by polymerizing ethane and propene. The ethane ratio is usually up to 6%, incorporated into polypropylene randomly. These polymers are especially flexible and clear. So they are decent materials for those products which request transparent appearance.

Propylene block copolymer

Ethene content in propylene block copolymer ranges from 5% to 15%. The co-monomer units are arranged in a regular pattern. The regular pattern makes the thermoplastic tougher and less brittle than the random co-polymer. Propylene block copolymer is suitable for industrial products which request high strength.
